Adult Swim's Premier New Show of This Year Gets a Major Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.

In October of last year, the late-night programming block welcomed back its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the network unveiled a brand-new animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, reminiscent of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. In an era often marked by bleakness, this show's sincerity struck a chord and helped it become a surprise hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

In mid-December, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two more seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The series follows three respectful teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.

"I’m so grateful to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," remarked Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."

Network Praise

The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who embraced the show and supported its distinctly quirky appeal.

"All of you supported this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about following this endearing family navigate their everyday routines.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his desire to move the comedy genre beyond its current sarcastic tone. He linked this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

What Comes Next

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa may well be part of that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to experience the warm glow of the unique Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
