This was a precisely formulated statement, assigning damage not to the departure decision but to its execution; faulting the politicians who negotiated it, not the voters who endorsed it. This distinction is essential when the financial plan is unveiled next month. The aim is to attribute some fiscal difficulties to the deal negotiated by Boris Johnson without seeming to disrespect the aspirations of those who voted to exit.

Economic Evidence and Professional Assessment

Leaving Europe was compared to Covid as difficult experiences faced by the public in recent years. Comparing Brexit to a disease signals a hardening of rhetoric, even if the financial steps currently under discussion in Brussels remain the same.

Opposition Criticism and Governing Reality

The objective is to connect the Reform leader to a well-known example of political mis-selling, implying he is unreliable; that he capitalizes on frustration and creates conflict but lacks governing competence.

Recent suspensions of four Kent councillors from Reform's local government team reinforces that message. Recorded videos of a online meeting showed internal disputes and blame-shifting, demonstrating the difficulties inexperienced figures face when delivering public services on tight finances—far tougher than campaigning about reducing inefficiency or controlling immigration.

This criticism is effective for the government, but it requires the government's service delivery being sufficiently strong that electing Reform seems a dangerous experiment. How much easier to argue now that EU exit is harmful and his promoter untrustworthy if they had stated this before. What additional choices might they have?
