Slot Insists He Is Safe and Retains The Club's Backing After PSV Eindhoven Humiliation
Arne Slot acknowledged that it was expected for concerns to be asked about his future following a further convincing defeat against the Dutch champions.
The Reds suffered their 9th defeat in 12 games, representing the team's worst streak since being relegated in the 1953-54 season.
They were outplayed by the Dutch league champions on a punishing evening at Anfield.
“I feel secure, I am OK, I've received a lot of backing from the top,” Slot remarked.
“It would be nice to reverse this trend and get a victory obviously but when you're working as a coach and underperforming then it's typical that people question you.”
He noted, “I'm comfortable with my role. This isn't the first time I’ve been in a challenging situation but it is about time that we changed our fortunes.”
Talks with The Board
Upon being questioned to expand on his conversations with the club's leadership, Slot explained:
“We talk a lot. They are supportive to the team and to me and those talks happen but they don’t call me all the time each day to say they trust me.”
He further stated, “In the normal conversations we have I sense the trust. But I haven’t spoken to them after this game so far so it remains to be seen.”
Familiar Issues and Squad Reaction
Slot expressed regret over recurring weaknesses from his team in their Champions League defeat, namely missed opportunities and leaking goals.
Meanwhile, midfielder Curtis Jones was more direct in his view of the team's situation.
“I haven't got the answers. Truthfully, I do not. I’m saying that to all,” Jones remarked.
“It's simply unacceptable. I don’t even have to wait to think about it. I'm beyond getting mad inside. I've reached the stage currently where I simply lack the vocabulary.”
He continued, “It’s hard because I play for the club I love. I’m a fan, and I’ve seen this club since I was young.”
“In recent memory, I've not seen a Liverpool team enduring a spell of this nature with performances so bad.”
Jones stated, “However we still have that badge on our shirts. And as long as it is removed, we'll continue to fight.”
“We’re going to try to get this team back to where it needs to be, prove once more what this club is about and the reason it's called the top club in the world.”
“However currently, we're in trouble and it needs to change.”
