The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Discloses He Has an Idea of How His Sci-Fi Series Might Finish... For Now.
The acclaimed writer-producer could not have predicted that his new science-fiction series would emerge as a breakout success. “The viewers have been incredible,” he states. “I did not foresee the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
As the debut season of the hit program coming to an end—and the next chapter officially in the works—the writers' room reflected on the audience reaction and whether it will impact the future direction of Pluribus.
Regarding the Incredible Viewer Reception
One could easily to get sidetracked by the widespread acclaim and audience predictions regarding Pluribus. He is striving to avoid both.
“It feels like constantly eating your favorite dessert and being tickled to death,” he says. “It's wonderful, but I hear about it from others, and that's on purpose. Never in my life searched for my own name online, nor do I ever intend to. It's quite the opposite. It's a bottomless pit I know I would get lost in and then I'd be living in squalor from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
Despite Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s it's impossible to ignore the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The most practical strategy is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“It is not our goal to change the plot,” says Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not influenced by what people are saying.”
“Better to keep our focus on the work,” he chimes in.
The Big Question: Does Vince Gilligan See the Conclusion of Pluribus?
Considering the creative staff are not listening by fan response, can we assume they already know how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? Essentially yes… in a way.
“We've developed some compelling concepts about where the show might end up,” Gilligan says. “but we are always ready to throw out a solid concept for a superior concept. That philosophy has guided us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we get a better idea and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Then again, if all else fails, director and writer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to fall back on.
“My recurring proposal is that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and the characters are inside it,” he says humorously, “but no one is buying it.”
Then again, one could always use the legendary finales?
“I'd love for Carol to wake up in bed next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
Pluribus is currently available on the streaming service.
