This Swine Life: Pig Named 6-7 Granted Clemency by Miami Dade County Mayor.
Although not quite at the equivalent scale as pardoning Thanksgiving turkeys, but the Miami-Dade County mayor had her own ceremonial pardon event this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She deserves this act of mercy. She has committed zero crimes,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with clear references to the vast quantity of pardons issued from the start of the beginning of a second term in office.
“If we disregard eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “I hope she experiences a lengthy and joyful existence free from concern.”
The event, either celebrating or rejecting the region’s Hispanic tradition of eating roast pork during the holidays, was created to replicate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The animal, provided by a first responder, was named for the popular vernacular phrase of young people yelling “6-7” – originating from a musical verse – often for no discernable reason. The trend became so ubiquitous that a prominent word reference recently declared “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection.
A New Life
This particular pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a rural sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“The annual pig pardon has become a cherished method to open the festive period,” said the event host, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It captures the character of Miami: joyful, varied, and based in heritage that unite the community. Annually, we are honored to observe tradition and kindness in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Attendees enjoyed a plant-based fare of croquettes and strong coffee as they toasted the pig's pardon.
